On June 11, 2018, Silver Spring’s acclaimed diversity suffered a tragic reminder that racial healing remains a goal still far from accomplished. A Montgomery County police officer accosted, pursued and then shot and killed Robert White, an unarmed Black man strolling in his own neighborhood. Robbie White (as he was known), had mental health challenges, but had never harmed anyone and was known for his friendly disposition. Why stop and persist in questioning a Black man in his own neighborhood engaged in walking — a man who asked to be left alone? Where was the credible evidence that Robbie White posed a threat to anyone? Subsequent incidents over the years have shown various police forces reflecting little strategic thinking about patrolling practices in a highly diverse community. How do we as a faith community further engage the police profiling and the use of deadly force? The first is to hold up the humanity of Robbie White and others affected by police violence. The second is to engage the community in an effort to change police practice in Montgomery County. Today’s service is one way we continue our work.
