PRELUDE, Awake, My Heart
Chancel Choir Jane M. Marshall

Awake, my heart, and render to God thy sure defender,
Thy Maker, thy preserver, a song of love and fervor.

Confirm my deeds and guide me: my day, with thee beside me,
Beginning, middle, ending, will all be upward tending.

My heart shall be thy dwelling, with joy and gladness swelling;
Thy word my nurture, giv’n to bring me on toward heaven.

*CALL TO WORSHIP
2017 Covenant Class

There is a song in my soul. It rises from the very depths demanding expression.

We can comprehend this song fully as many voices, raised together, become one.

The melody is compassion. The lyrics are service. The rhythm is activity. The harmony is fellowship.

The song, the singer, and the singing: we are God’s song. Let us worship God.

PRAYER OF ABIDING & THE LORD’S PRAYER
2017 Covenant Class

“Sisters and Brothers, With One Voice”
Words & arrangement copyright WGRG, Iona Community, Glascow, UK

ALL SINGING:
Sisters and brothers, with one voice
Confirm your calling and rejoice:
Each is God’s child and each God’s choice.
Alleluia! Alleluia! Alleluia!

We place ourselves in your presence; we rest in the promise of your grace. Our minds and our spirits are cluttered with many thoughts and feelings that threaten to pull our attention away from you. Let us unclench our fists and release these things:

ALL SINGING:
Strangers no more, but cherished friends
Live as the body God intends,
Sharing the light the Spirit lends.
Alleluia! Alleluia! Alleluia!

We release all that we have done today–whether for good or for ill.
We release all that we feel like we should have done today, but did not do.
We release all that we need to do tomorrow.
We release our fear. We release our anxiety. We release our impatience. We release our pride.

ALL SINGING:
Not, though, by wisdom, wealth, or skill,
Nor by ourselves can we fulfill
What, for the world, is God’s own will.
Alleluia! Alleluia! Alleluia!

All of the thoughts, all of the feelings that pull us away from you, O God, we release.
Fill us now with the joy and the peace of your deep, abiding presence.

ALL SINGING:
Seeking and serving with one voice,
Confirm your calling and rejoice:
Each is God’s child and each God’s choice.
Alleluia! Alleluia! Alleluia!

We offer all of ourselves to you, our One God, Creator, Redeemer, Sustainer, praying together …

Holy God, who is in heaven, hallowed be your name. Your kingdom come, your will be done, on earth as it is in heaven. Give us this day our daily bread, and forgive us our debts as we forgive our debtors. Lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil. For yours is the kingdom and the power and the glory forever and ever. AMEN

WELCOMING OUR NEW MEMBERS

INTRODUCTION & QUESTION TO THE NEW MEMBERS

We at Christ Congregational Church welcome you as new members of our community this morning. You have come to worship, play, work, and grow among us. Ours is a free fellowship; we have no creeds and you are free to bring your ideas and beliefs to this fellowship to share with others. I invite you to join with us in the religious search for meaning and purpose in life, informed by our individual beliefs and the history and traditions of the United Church of Christ. Is it your desire to enter into covenant relationship with Christ Congregational Church, United Church of Christ?

Response
It is. We will seek to be faithful, with God’s help. We pledge to share with you the joys and sorrows of our life together, affirming our mutual ministry in Christ.

CHRIST CONGREGATIONAL CHURCH COVENANT
The Board of Deacons

We covenant with one another as a community of faith grounded in God, the source of all life. We seek to walk in the ways of God’s abiding love, made known or to be made known to us through the Holy Scriptures, the life and teachings of Jesus, and the continuing guidance of the Holy Spirit in our lives and worship. Affirming that all persons are created in the image of God, we honor and celebrate people of all races, cultures, ages, abilities, sexual orientations, and gender identities. In our life together we endeavor to support each other on our spiritual journeys with open minds and loving hearts. We hold it to be the mission of the church to embody the good news of God’s love for all people by laboring for the progress of knowledge, the promotion of justice, and the reign of peace. We work and pray for the transformation of ourselves and all creation into realms of God’s compassion; and in faith we place ourselves in God’s hands, in death as in life.

WELCOME AND PROMISE FROM THE CONGREGATION
The Outreach and Engagement Board

We, members and friends of Christ Congregational Church, welcome you with great joy into our Christian walk, work and worship. We pledge to you our love and prayers. May God grant that by loving and being loved, serving and being served, forgiving and being forgiven, we may truly further God’s Reign on earth.

CCC’S INTERGENERATIONAL COVENANT CLASS

Today we celebrate the work of our teen and adults who have met weekly with Pastor Matt since February. They went through the entire Covenant Class curriculum, learning about faith topics and exploring the church. Each student worked with mentors and also wrote a personal faith statement. Statements are posted in the lobby. Members of the class are: Lydia Brandt-Lair, Erin Curry, M’Liss Dematatis, Sue Dollins, Estelle Franklin, LJ Ingram, Jonathan Mickles, Alison Petersen, Steve Petersen, Holly Stephens and Jeanne Young

Today’s Altar Flowers are given by Linda Phelps
in loving memory of Mable and Charles Elliott who would have
celebrated their 66th wedding anniversary and Mom’s 88th birthday this month.

The Sanctuary Committee invites you to take a bouquet of flowers, made from the beautiful altar arrangement, to someone to whom you’d like to extend support and prayers. You will find the bouquets in the church lobby window after the worship service.
