The Wider Community
Rally in Support of Health Care Reform, Tuesday, March 9, 10:30 AM, Dupont Circle and the Ritz Hotel - On Tuesday, March 9, many of the organizations that have been working for health care reform will hold a rally to urge Congress to pass such legislation and to fight against the anticipated push by the health insurance industry to kill this effort by unprecedented lobbying of Congress. America’s Health Insurance Plans (“AHIP”), the largest insurance industry lobbying group, will be holding a conference at the Ritz Hotel on March 9. The plan of health care reform supporters is to march from Dupont Circle to the hotel beginning at 10:30 AM for a period of “prophetic action” to counter what Congress will be hearing from the industry. Contact Anne Weissenborn, Coordinator for Social Action, at (301) 681-6042 if you would like to be part of a delegation from CCC to attend the rally.
The Central Atlantic Conference, UCC, has forwarded to all its congregations a letter from the Rev. Bob Edgar, President of Common Cause, in support of this march. Rev. Edgar states: “From the congressional level to the grassroots, leaders agree: To pass reform, advocates for working families, the middle class and the poor must speak out, and our message must be loud and clear enough to circulate widely in the media. On behalf of the millions without insurance, the underinsured, those facing run-away premiums and bankruptcy, our voice must be heard such that public attention remains focused on the urgency of reform.”
Together We Keep Growing
Together We Grow is the theme of CCC’s year-long reaffirmation of its Open and Affirming, Anti-Racism, and Just Peace Covenants. Together we are growing into ever-increasing awareness, understanding and community – the goals of the three covenants.
Participate in Developing An Anti-racism Timeline - Did you know that CCC was the first integrated church in Montgomery County? Part of growth is examining our historical roots and recognizing what still needs to be done. Looking again at our Anti-Racism Covenant, the Board for Social Witness invites everyone to join in the creation of an anti-racism timeline, showing where our nation, our denomination, and our congregation have been in the struggles against prejudice and inequality and for full inclusion of all, regardless of race, in our lives together.
Starting today, Sunday, March 7, and continuing on March 14, please come to the Social Hall after the second service to place your memories, personal involvements and dreams on the timeline that will be under construction on the wall there. Help remember and/or learn about our national, denominational and congregational history, particularly CCC’s history that is full of civil rights-related treasures not to be lost.
Continue the Dialog – On November 15th we affirmed CCC’s Open and Affirming Covenant. Sunday, March 14, at 11:45 in Room 207, join us as we continue to discuss ideas which were generated before, during, and after that celebration regarding potential ways in which CCC could live out the Open and Affirming Covenant. All are welcome.
