May our time together renew our hope.
May the stories we share refresh our courage.
May the songs we sing lift our spirits.
May the words we speak invigorate us.
May the touch of hands, the sound of laughter,
the sight of faces new and familiar, restore us in faith

*OPENING HYMN    Sing for God’s Glory    LOBE DEN HERREN

Sung to the tune “Sing Praise to God” #22, TNCH
Kathy Galloway and John Bell © John L. Bell, Church of Scotland Panel on Worship

Sing for God’s glory that colors the dawn of creation,
racing across the sky trailing bright clouds of elation;
sun of delight succeeds the velvet of night,
warming the earth’s exultation.

Sing for God’s power that shatters the chains that would bind us,
searing the darkness of fear and despair that could blind us,
touching our shame with love that will not lay blame,
reaching our gently to find us.

David Bell

God of surprises, startle us with truth we do not see, amaze us with your power and grace, beckon us, and lead us far above restricted hope and narrow faith. Together, we pray the ancient words of the church, saying. . .

Holy God, who art in heaven, hallowed be your name.  Your kingdom come, your will be done, on earth as it is in heaven.  Give us this day our daily bread, and forgive us our debts as we forgive our debtors.  Lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil. For yours is the kingdom and the power and the glory forever and ever.  AMEN

Questions to the New Members
Pastor Gloria Grant
Is it your desire to enter into covenant relationship with Christ Congregational Church, United Church of Christ?

It is. We will seek to be faithful, with God’s help. We pledge to share with you the joys and sorrows of our life together, affirming our mutual ministry in Christ.

Christ Congregational Church Covenant
The Board of Deacons

We covenant with one another as a community of faith grounded in God, the source of all life.  We seek to walk in the ways of God’s abiding love, made known or to be made known to us through the Holy Scriptures, the life and teachings of Jesus, and the continuing guidance of the Holy Spirit in our lives and worship.  Affirming that all persons are created in the image of God, we honor and celebrate people of all races, cultures, ages, abilities, sexual orientations, and gender identities.  In our life together we endeavor to support each other on our spiritual journeys with open minds and loving hearts.  We hold it to be the mission of the church to embody the good news of God’s love for all people by laboring for the progress of knowledge, the promotion of justice, and the reign of peace.  We work and pray for the transformation of ourselves and all creation into realms of God’s compassion; and in faith we place ourselves in God’s hands, in death as in life.

Welcome and Promise from the Congregation

The Prayers I Make
Jane M. Marshall
Chancel Choir
words by Michaelangelo Buonarroti, translated by Christopher Wordsworth

The prayers I make will then be sweet indeed,
If Thou the spirit give by which I pray;
My unassisted heart is barren clay,
Which of its native self can nothing feed.

Of good and pious works Thou art the seed
Which quickens where Thou say’st it may;
Unless Thou show us then Thine own true way,
No man can find it! Father, thou must lead!

Do Thou, then, breathe those thoughts into my mind
By which such virtue may in me be bred
That in Thy holy footsteps I may tread;
The fetters of my tongue do Thou unbind,
That I may have the pow’r to sing of Thee
And sound, and sound Thy praises everlastingly.

Praise God, from whom all blessings flow:
Praise God, all creatures here below;
Praise God for all that love has done;
Creator, Christ, and Spirit, One.

David Bell

We give thanks for all we have, for all we are. And we give thanks for the privilege of responding to God’s generosity with these gifts and with our lives.
