*CALL TO WORSHIP
Pastor Matt Braddock

From the hundred wants that tug at us.
From the thousand voices that hound us.
From every fear that haunts us.
From each confusion that inhabits us.
From what comes to divide, to destroy.
From what disturbs and does not let us rest.
Deliver us, O God, and turn us toward your restless peace.

*OPENING HYMN
# 576    For The Healing of the Nations    WESTMINSTER ABBEY

PRAYER OF INVOCATION & THE LORD’S PRAYER
Marti Hoffacker
Based on the words of Rev. Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr.

Injustice anywhere is a threat to justice everywhere. The hope of a secure and livable world lies with disciplined nonconformists who are dedicated to justice, peace, sisterhood and brotherhood. Human progress is neither automatic nor inevitable. Every step toward the goal of justice requires sacrifice, suffering, and struggle; the tireless exertions and passionate concern of dedicated individuals. We proclaim the saving justice of Almighty God, and we pray together saying . . .

Holy God, who art in heaven, hallowed be your name. Your kingdom come, your will be done, on earth as it is in heaven. Give us this day our daily bread, and forgive us our debts as we forgive our debtors. Lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil. For yours is the kingdom and the power and the glory forever and ever. AMEN

*HYMN OF GRACE                      Sing for God’s Glory    LOBE DEN HERREN

Sung to the tune “Sing Praise to God” #22, TNCH
Kathy Galloway and John Bell © John L. Bell, Church of Scotland Panel on Worship

Sing for God’s glory that colors the dawn of creation,
Racing across the sky trailing bright clouds of elation;
Sun of delight succeeds the velvet of night,
Warming the earth’s exultation.

Sing for God’s power that shatters the chains that would bind us,
Searing the darkness of fear and despair that could blind us,
Touching our shame with love that will not lay blame,
Reaching out gently to find us.

PRAYER OF CONFESSION
Pastor Matt Braddock
Based on the words of Rev. Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr.

Love is the only force that can change an enemy into a friend. Humans must meet human conflict with a method which rejects revenge, aggression and retaliation. The foundation of such a method is love. Have we not come to such an impasse in the modern world that we must love our enemies or else? The chain reaction of evil-hate begetting hate, wars producing more wars, must be broken, or else we shall be plunged into the dark abyss of annihilation.

When we treat our faith as nothing more than a self-help system and You, God, as simply a cure for whatever ails us,
Where is the love?
When we use the gifts our planet gives us with little care for our wastefulness and destruction,
Where is the love?
When we deny and disdain truths and practices that others hold dear,
Where is the love?
When we ignore the sickness, the loneliness, struggle and the vulnerability of others, because it doesn’t affect us,
Where is the love?
When we berate ourselves for our failures, or hold ourselves to impossible and trivial standards,
Where is the love? Forgive us, Lord, and teach us and our world what it really means to love.
