Everyone is invited to take part in a Lunch and Learn next Sunday. The main focus will be upon the portion of the platform of the Movement for Black Lives that supports Palestinian opposition to the Israeli occupation of the West Bank. The Rev. Carolyn Boyd-Clark, Associate Pastor, Plymouth Congregational UCC, DC, will lead thediscussion.
We will hopefully also be joined by the Rev. Alex Vishio, Assistant Minister for Social Justice & Witness, Central Atlantic Conference, UCC, who will address bills (SB 739 and HB 949) currently before the Maryland General Assembly which would “list” (i.e., blacklist) any “nongovernmental entity, organization, or group” that is “participating in a boycott [including divestments] of Israel” – including “Israeli-controlled territories” (i.e., the settlements) –from benefits of investment by or procurement of contracts from the State of Maryland. These anti-boycott bills raise very important First Amendment issues. Similar legislation was recently defeated in Virginia. The text of the Maryland bills can be found at http://mgaleg.maryland.gov/2017RS/bills/sb/sb0739F.pdf.
