Quilters, a musical with book by Molly Newman and Barbara Damashek and lyrics and music by Barbara Damashek, depicts the lives of American pioneer women through a series of short tales and tableaux. Divided loosely into 16 sections, each represented by a quilt block, these vignettes dramatize the challenges and realities of a woman’s life on the American frontier: school days, courtship, weddings, childbirth, country roads, religion, raising children, aging and even log cabins. Quilting was a means to an end – a way to craft something useful and practical while passing lonely evenings on the isolated prairie or getting together with neighbors. A quilt could be a shroud as easily as a blanket, tell a story in fabric when it couldn’t be shared in words, and provide a reason to seek the companionship of other women. The threads that tied women together in the raw frontier communities, in shared experiences, and across generations are literally and figuratively the threads that transformed pieces of scrap into works of art, heirlooms that transcend their practical utility to become the repository of story, survival and triumph.
